The Huasteco Regional Museum is a Civil Association, whose purpose is to preserve and disseminate the archaeological and ethnographic testimonies of the Huasteca Potosina. The idea of creating a museum for Ciudad Valles came from Mrs. Oralia Gutiérrez de Sánchez, when she observed (after the conclusion of the Mexico-Laredo national highway) how national and foreign tourists obtained archaeological pieces bought or given by locals.
He decided to invite 40 Vallens related to culture; The appointment was at the XETR radio studios where she was a chronicler and narrator, but none of those invited attended, and since the invitation had been made on the air, those who attended were other people, and with these the group “Tantocob” was formed. , which means “place of clouds”).
Among the initiators were Carlos Gutiérrez, Antonia Gutiérrez, Roque Gutiérrez, Belem Altamirano, Alberto Navarro, Asdrúbal Sánchez, Adolfo Soria, Trinidad Alonso, Juan Bermea, Emma Meléndez, Cipriana Morales, Mario Oliva, Genovevo de la Parra, Gonzalo González, Beatriz Gutiérrez and Aurora Sánchez.
Venancio Rubio, Moisés Gallegos, Rafael Yudiche and Fausto Flores appeared as guides. Organized, they decided to go out to the countryside every Sunday to locate vestiges. On the excursion they carried a banner that had the Valles hieroglyph at the top and a tree representing the study of archeology and forests.
From the first tours they collected a piece of mammoth tusk in the ravine of a stream north of the municipality, as well as a pot with a blowing anthropomorphic face. With these first fruits of his concern, he requested permission from the National Institute of Anthropology and History to form a museum in Ciudad Valles.
Permission was granted immediately, and Teacher Oralia Gutiérrez took advantage of the radio broadcast to attract the attention of the Huastecs and teach them to value their cultural and archaeological heritage. He got Paula Osuna from Osuna (Mother of Don Gregorio Osuna from the tourism sector) to give him one of her lots from the “Rotarios” neighborhood. The preliminary project, prepared by the architect Luis Angulo y Ortega, was gifted by Don Joaquín Meade and thus, on the corner of “Artes and Rotarios” streets, the wife of Governor López Dávila laid the first stone in 1963. There, Master Oralia began to build the building.
The initial construction of the property was possible thanks to small donations received from visitors. Tourists saw in his home an archaeological collection made up of eight thousand pieces, collected over two decades of research. Governor Antonio Rocha Cordero, seeing that only the walls were left, with ten days remaining until the end of his mandate, provided him with the resources to make the roof, the frames and the window glass for the museum. The building was finally inaugurated on December 31, 1978 by Lic. Guillermo Fonseca Álvarez, under the name of Museo Regional Huasteco AC
On January 4, 2005, Teacher Oralia passed away, leaving her dear friend and ally, Mrs. Elia Lyne Casados, as Honorary Director. During the pandemic period, Father Ramón Gerardo Gutiérrez Morales serves in this position and from the 1st. From May 2022 to date, Eng. Servando Rodolfo Carrillo Gutiérrez takes over as Director. Currently there are 10,988 pieces, with an Archaeological room and the Oralia Gutiérrez Library
